Founder duo impressed at Folkemødet with AI-powered monitoring of nature

Tech Savvy icon Founder duo impressed at Folkemødet with AI-powered monitoring of nature

It was the startup Koordinat that won first place in Aarhus University’s pitch competition at Folkemødet 2025. The victory triggered a prize of DKK 75,000 and was secured in front of an audience of over 100 listeners, where Koordinat impressed the judges with their solution for monitoring protected nature.

Koordinat was developed by Mads Emil Marker and Thomas Rasmussen, who both have a background in computer science from Aarhus University. Their AI-based tool is designed to provide municipalities with an annual overview of the state of nature – an alternative to the current practice where nature management is typically only assessed every ten years.

“Nature management in Denmark only happens once every ten years. We want to change that with artificial intelligence. Our tool gives municipalities an annual overview of the state of nature – and it works. We have tested it in a number of municipalities and are now ready to scale. With the prize of DKK 75,000, we will buy a bigger computer with a large graphics card, because computing power is crucial for us to actually create impact,” says the two founders of Koordinat in an interview with The Kitchen.

The startup has already tested the solution in a number of municipalities and is now ready to scale. The prize money will be used to upgrade their computer equipment to increase their computing power – a necessity to handle large amounts of data and ensure effective analysis of nature’s evolution.

“We want to make a difference for nature – not only in Denmark, but also internationally. In the short term, it’s about spreading the solution to more Danish municipalities. In the long term, we want to help ensure that protected nature is actually protected – in Denmark, Europe and the world,” the founders explain.

The judging panel emphasized Koordinat’s concrete plan for using the funds and the ability to communicate a technical solution in an understandable and engaging way. With ambitions for both national and international dissemination, Koordinat is committed to strengthening biodiversity and the protection of natural areas through technology.
