New research unit to provide deeper insight into business conditions

In September 2025, a new research unit will open its doors at Aarhus BSS. CEFAU – Centre for Economic Facts and Analysis for Business – will be placed under the Department of Economics and Business Economics and its primary purpose will be to bridge the gap between research and business through in-depth, research-based analysis.

“Business helps shape society and its outcomes. Yet our insight and understanding of the opportunities, barriers and policy impact on Danish businesses is still both under-researched and incomplete. When society is affected by changes either nationally or internationally, CEFAU’s research and analysis can provide answers to how business and society are actually affected,” says Professor Philipp Schröder on the university’s website.

Philipp Schröder and Professor Michael Svarer are behind the initiative, and together they will lead the new center. CEFAU has been created in close dialog with the business community, which has long sought an environment where research-based knowledge is translated into practical insights relevant to business development and business policy.

The focus will be on shedding light on the socio-economic and political conditions that form the framework for business operations.

“The purpose is to contribute independent, research-based analyses and perspectives on current economic issues and thus support the public debate and political decisions with fact-based knowledge that affects the Danish business community’s conditions and business opportunities. Therefore, we choose which topics to analyze and research based on relevance and the arm’s length principle and not on the fact that others want a particular topic highlighted,” says Michael Svarer.

The Salling Foundations are behind a donation of DKK 10 million, and the amount is matched by the Department of Economics and Business Administration and Aarhus BSS, which ensures a solid financial foundation for the center’s start-up and operation in the first years, according to Aarhus University.
