AC5I8677

Aarhus has become a thriving hub for technological innovation, driven by a strong network of knowledge institutions, startups, and scale-ups. A key player in this ecosystem is INCUBA, which fosters growth and success of ambitious companies. In this interview, Jacob Mogensen shares insights into INCUBA’s role and the future of the tech scene in Aarhus.

Jacob Doktor Mogensen, CEO of INCUBA, brings over 15 years of expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship. With a Master’s in International Business from Aarhus University, he has led national projects and managed key facilities like Agro Business Park. In 2024, Jacob joined INCUBA as Head of Acceleration and later became CEO. INCUBA, Aarhus' premier science park, supports startups by bridging research, education, and industry. It offers flexible facilities, networking opportunities, and access to mentors, investors, and business developers, helping startups scale efficiently. Its strategic locations near key stakeholders foster collaboration and growth.

What are the key strengths of the tech scene in Aarhus?

“Aarhus benefits from world-class knowledge institutions, a strong talent pipeline, and a proven track record of tech innovation. The city has gained global recognition for its expertise in key technological fields, making it an attractive destination for entrepreneurs and investors”

Why does it make sense for tech companies to establish themselves in Aarhus?

“Aarhus offers access to top-tier talent, experienced professionals, and specialized facilities tailored to tech companies. Additionally, the city provides an excellent work-life balance, an aspect highly valued by tech employees. The Danish model of collaboration between public institutions, academia, and private enterprises further enhances the city's attractiveness, as seen in initiatives like the Security Tech Space, which has strengthened Aarhus’ position in cybersecurity innovation.”

Which facilities and services does INCUBA offer to help companies scale?

“INCUBA provides state-of-the-art facilities designed to support startups and scaleups at every stage of their growth. This includes flexible office spaces, networking events, and one-on-one mentoring. Companies benefit from cost-effective solutions and direct access to high-level service providers, investors, and industry experts, creating an optimal environment for scaling their operations efficiently”

What is needed to ensure continued recruitment of tech talent in Aarhus?

“To sustain and enhance talent recruitment, Aarhus must focus on increasing international visibility, expanding educational programs, and offering attractive opportunities for global talent. Ensuring that students and young professionals gain early career exposure in the city significantly improves retention rates. Strengthening collaborations between academia and industry is crucial for bridging skill gaps and aligning education with industry demands”

What does the funding landscape look like for startups in Aarhus, and is there access to capital?

“The funding landscape in Aarhus is continuously improving, with increasing investor interest. INCUBA alone has a network of over 200 registered investors, including Business Angels, VCs, and family offices. The Danish Business Angels (DanBan) network is becoming more active, and local banks are offering specialized services for startups. Events such as the Aarhus Investor Summit are also driving awareness and attracting foreign investors. However, greater engagement from large funds and established corporates is needed to provide the necessary resources for high-growth tech startups, ultimately fostering the emergence of unicorn companies from Aarhus.”
